It’s Not the Tool, It’s What You Do With It

When I first started as a designer, I didn’t have access to industry-standard tools like Photoshop or Illustrator. But that didn’t stop me. My drive to create outweighed the limitations of my resources, so I turned to what I had—PowerPoint. Yes, PowerPoint.

Surprisingly, I could bring my ideas to life with this unlikely tool, proving to myself that creativity isn’t dependent on software. It’s about vision, ingenuity, and determination. A good designer doesn’t need fancy tools to create something meaningful; they can work wonders with the bare minimum.

The Power of Resourcefulness

Design is less about the tools you use and more about how you use them. When resources are limited, you learn to be creative and problem-solve in ways that sharpen your skills. Working with basic tools like PowerPoint taught me how to maximize features, think outside the box, and adapt.

Tools as Amplifiers

While I firmly believe that tools don’t define a designer, I also recognize the immense value of having the right ones. Over the years, advancements in design software have revolutionized the creative process. Tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, and now AI-assisted platforms have made it easier to turn ideas into reality, save time, and push creative boundaries.

But even with all these advancements, the heart of design remains the same: it’s about what you create, not what you use to create it.

Embracing the Best of Both Worlds

Resourcefulness and access to tools don’t have to be mutually exclusive. A good designer balances the two—being creative with the basics while leveraging advanced tools to amplify their craft. It’s about making the tools work for you, not relying on them to do the work for you.

So, whether you’re working with PowerPoint, pen and paper, or the latest design software, remember: it’s not the tool that defines your work—it’s what you do with it.

What’s the most unconventional tool you’ve used for a creative project? Let’s hear your story!
